Former President Donald Trump says the only reason he was on the stage at the Republican National Convention was because of the “grace of Almighty God.”

During a speech accepting the Republican Party’s presidential nomination, Trump recounted in emotional terms his experience from a rally on Saturday when he narrowly survived an assassination attempt.

“I’m not supposed to be here tonight,” the former president declared.

The crowd chanted, “Yes, you are!”

However, Trump responded, “Thank you. But, I’m not. And I’ll tell you, I stand before you in this arena only by the grace of Almighty God.”

While Trump noted how close he came to death, he also spoke of former fire chief Corey Comperatore, who was killed during the shooting at the rally on Saturday.

During his speech, Comperatore’s firefighter uniform and helmet were placed on the stage. At one point, the former president walked over and kissed Comperatore’s helmet.

After noting how respected Comperatore was, Trump noted he died while trying to shield his family from bullets being fired into the rally.

Trump added, “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for others. This the spirit that forged America in her darkest hours and this the love that will lead America back to the summit of human achievement and greatness.”
