Newsom: Family Will Decide Presidential Run

MUNICH, GERMANY - FEBRUARY 13: Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, attends the Panel Discussion 'Playing With Fire: The Need for Decisive Climate Action' at the 62nd Munich Security Conference on February 13, 2026 in Munich, Germany. The conference, which brings together government leaders, security experts and defence ministers, is taking place at a time when the traditional western political and military alliance is facing rupture due to the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump. California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is considered a favored Democratic candidate in the 2028 presidential election.

But someone very close to Newsom does not want that to happen.

That person? His son, Newsom told CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union,” per The Hill.

“My son, Romeo, was very powerful, texted me a few months ago, and there was some headline that suggested that I made some decision, and he goes, ‘Dad, are you running [for] president?’” Newsom said.

‘I said, ‘No, we’ll do [the] decision as a family.’ He goes, ‘You can’t.’ I said, ‘Why?’ He goes, ’I’m too young. You need to spend more time with us,’” he continued. “I mean, how do you deal with that one?”

Newsom has been outspoken against President Donald Trump (R) and has been seen as a contender in the next presidential election.

Should Newsom prioritize family over a presidential run?

His press office has adopted similar social media tactics to Trump’s, including posting in all caps and using brash language, in mocking Trump and his allies.

Newsom has stepped up his game by appearing on the world stage and making trips to Davos, Switzerland, last month for the World Economic Forum and to the Munich Security Conference earlier this month.

At the Munich Security Conference, Newsom suggested that world leaders think the U.S. is a “wrecking ball” under Trump’s leadership.

“They see us as a wrecking ball,” he told CNN’s Kasie Hunt. “They see us as unreliable, and a lot of them think irrevocable. They don’t think we’ll ever come back to our original form.”

“I’m not as convinced of that. Whatever happens, we can undo, we can shapeshift, we can fix it,” Newsom said.
