The Justice Department announced that it would not bring charges against former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe, who had been under investigation regarding an illegal leak to the media.

In a letter to McCabe’s lawyers on Friday, Justice Department officials said they would not bring charges against their client.

“We write to inform you that, after careful consideration, the Government has decided not to pursue criminal charges against your client, Andrew G. McCabe, arising form the referral by the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) to our Office of conduct,” the letter read.

“At long last, justice has been done in this matter. We said at the outset of the criminal investigation, almost two years ago, that if the facts and the law determined the result, no charges would be brought,” McCabe’s lawyers said praising the decision.

McCabe had been under investigation for allegedly lying to investigators about directing a subordinate to illegal leak information about to a reporter who was writing a story on the agency’s investigation of the Clinton Foundation.

News that the Justice Department would not prosecute McCabe quickly set social media ablaze with conservatives claiming it was evidence of a double standard.

1. If Barr were a Trump hack, McCabe wouldn’t get this pass.

2. Avoiding politically-charged prosecution of Trump critic may be wise on some level (McCabe lost his job at least).

3. OTOH, how many Trump allies have been prosecuted for lying to feds? McCabe did precisely that.

The letter also comes less than 24 hours after Attorney General William Barr criticized President Donald Trump for his tweets about the Justice Department and ongoing cases.
