Going to Harvard University became a lot easier for some families thanks to a “significant expansion of financial aid.”

An announcement was made Monday to make tuition free for students whose families with annual incomes of $200,000 or less, CBS News reported.

Harvard, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, gave a special nod to those students whose families making less than $100,000 a year — they will have all other expenses such as food, housing, health insurance and travel costs covered.

This appears to be quite a boost as Harvard covered all expenses for families with incomes below $85,000. The new financial aid policy will start in the next academic year.

“Putting Harvard within financial reach for more individuals widens the array of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives that all of our students encounter, fostering their intellectual and personal growth,” Harvard president Alan Garber said in a statement.

Families who make more than $200,000 can also get financial aid, “depending on their circumstances,” Harvard said.

Harvard’s decision to provide free tuition for families earning up to $200,000 reflects a broader shift toward entitlement over merit and personal responsibility. Higher education, particularly at an elite institution, is a privilege that should come with an expectation of…
