Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is not weighing in publicly on the news of former President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign.

On Wednesday, the Kentucky senator was asked to respond to Trump’s announcement.

“The way I’m going to go into this presidential primary season is to stay out of it,” McConnell responded.

He added, “I don’t have a dog in that fight. I think it’s going to be a highly contested nomination fight with other candidates entering. And it’s all going to be quite good for you all to cover.”

When asked if he would like Trump to travel to Georgia ahead of the run-off election for the state’s Senate seat, McConnell said, “We’re going to do everything we can to get Herschel Walker elected.”

Trump’s campaign announcement comes after a disappointing election where Republicans failed to flip control of the Senate and are projected to win a narrower-than-expected majority in the House, some conservatives blamed Trump for the outcome.

Other conservatives blamed McConnell and House Republican leadership.

Despite the blame directed at the Senate Republican leader, McConnell secured enough votes in his caucus to fend off Sen. Rick Scott’s (R-Fla.) bid to become minority leader.

While he did not comment on Trump’s 2024 campaign, the Kentucky senator has previously vowed to support the Republican presidential nominee.
