President Donald Trump announced Tuesday the suspension of a planned U.S. attack on Iran, declaring a two-week halt to military action as diplomatic efforts intensify behind the scenes.

Trump warned that Iran’s “whole civilization will die” if it fails to meet his deadline, stating that the U.S. would probably strike that night because the chances of a deal before the 8 p.m. cutoff are unlikely. He added that such an outcome could end decades of “extortion, corruption, and death.” Trump announced on Truth Social that he agreed to pause what he described as “destructive force” already in motion.

“Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” Trump wrote. “This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.”

Trump pointed to what he called significant progress toward a broader agreement with Iran, revealing that Tehran submitted a 10-point proposal that U.S. officials now consider a viable framework for negotiation.

“We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate. Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated. On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and also representing the Countries of the Middle East, it is an Honor to have this Longterm problem close to resolution,” Trump added.

Should the U.S. agree to a two-week ceasefire with Iran for negotiations?

Minister of Foreign Affairs Islamic Republic of Iran, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, responded to Trump’s decision to postpone planned attack. Araghchi said the country’s Supreme National Security Council would suspend defensive operations if attacks against Iran were halted.

Trump announced on Feb. 28 that U.S. and Israeli forces had launched Operation Epic Fury against Iran after negotiations over the country’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs collapsed. In a March 2 interview with Fox News, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said that Iranian negotiators insisted the regime would continue enriching uranium and claimed it already had enough material for nearly a dozen “dirty” weapons.

Trump previously threatened to target Iranian power plants in a March 21 post on Truth Social unless the Islamic regime stopped obstructing the Strait of Hormuz. He temporarily held off on the threat on March 23 and later pushed the deadline to 8 p.m. Eastern Time Tuesday.
