Prosecco is meant to be popped in celebration, not to explode unexpectedly in someone’s kitchen. Yet Costco has announced a sweeping recall of its Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene after discovering that unopened bottles may spontaneously shatter, releasing dangerous shards of glass without warning.

The recall impacts bottles labeled with item number 1879870, purchased between April 25 and August 26. Customers in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin are directly affected.

In a letter to members, Costco gave a stark warning: “If you have an unopened bottle, do not open it. Dispose of the bottle immediately by wrapping the unopened bottle in paper towels and placing it in a plastic bag before placing it in the garbage to avoid risk from shattered glass.”

The company also made clear that customers should not attempt to bring the bottles back to stores. Instead, refunds will be issued to anyone who presents the recall letter at a Costco location. Because Costco tracks purchases through its membership system, the company was able to contact buyers directly.

So far, no serious injuries have been reported. But customers have already noticed unusual behavior from the bottles. One Chicago resident, Danielle Callas, shared her experience with The New York Times. She said corks launched on their own on three separate occasions. At one bridal shower, she explained, a cork shot across the room and struck her friend in the eye as prosecco sprayed over the table.

The recall is just the latest in a series of safety warnings involving Costco products. Earlier this week, the retailer pulled Dubai-style chocolate from Rolling Pin Baking Company after packaging errors failed to disclose wheat as gluten. Costco also recalled Anker Power Bank’s A1257 models after testing revealed their lithium-ion batteries could overheat and explode, posing burn risks.

Other alerts have included BowFlex adjustable dumbbells, tied to more than 100 reported injuries, and 18-packs of Topo Chico Mineral Water, which were found contaminated with a dangerous bacteria that can lead to blood infections.

The wave of recalls isn’t unique to Costco. Walmart recently pulled back 110,000 mini beauty fridges marketed by Paris Hilton after safety concerns were flagged. And the Food and Drug Administration issued its own alert, recalling more than 57,000 burrito meals sold at Target because they contained undeclared shrimp, posing a risk for people with shellfish allergies.

Costco’s Kirkland Prosecco is a ticking time bomb in your pantry.

Unopened bottles shattering? That’s not just negligence; it’s a disgrace.

Remove it, or you might find a glass explosion waiting to happen.

For now, the company is urging caution, telling customers not to take any chances with unopened bottles. Shoppers are being reminded that while refunds are available, the priority is to dispose of any affected product safely to avoid potential injury.
