A confrontation that began over a missing firearm accessory at an Amazon fulfillment center ended in a deadly shooting and now a lengthy prison sentence for a Minnesota man.

According to Fox News, Mohamed A. Hared, 26, was sentenced Thursday to 128 months behind bars after pleading guilty earlier this year to second-degree unintentional murder while committing a felony in the death of fellow employee Ahmed Ibrahim Cariif, 22.

The fatal incident occurred on June 29, 2024, outside an Amazon facility in Lakeville, Minnesota, where Hared, Cariif, and another coworker had traveled together for an overnight shift.

According to court records, tensions escalated during a work break when Hared realized a flashlight attachment was missing from a handgun he had left inside the vehicle used by the three men.

Investigators said Hared accused Cariif and another coworker of taking the missing item. Both men denied having anything to do with it.

The disagreement did not end there.

Several hours later, during another break, the three men returned to the vehicle to continue searching for the attachment. Court documents state that one coworker suggested involving security personnel, but Hared allegedly continued insisting the item had been stolen.

Authorities said the situation intensified later when a second confrontation broke out between the men.

According to investigators, surveillance footage showed the individuals had separated before the dispute reignited.

During that encounter, Hared pulled out a handgun, according to the criminal complaint.

A witness later told police that Cariif attempted to grab the weapon after it was displayed.

The complaint states that the first shot fired struck a nearby vehicle.

After the gun discharged, both Cariif and the witness pleaded with Hared.

“Don’t shoot,” they shouted, according to investigators.

Authorities said Hared then fired a second round.

That bullet struck Cariif in the chest.

Emergency responders were unable to save him. An autopsy later determined the gunshot had damaged his heart, lung, and aorta, causing fatal injuries.

Investigators reviewing surveillance footage concluded that Hared had opportunities to walk away from the conflict but instead continued engaging in the confrontation before the shooting occurred.

Hared was originally charged with second-degree intentional murder. However, he later entered a guilty plea to the reduced charge of second-degree unintentional murder while committing a felony.

When charges were first announced in July 2024, Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena condemned the violence.

“It’s so senseless the victim was shot to death over such a trivial matter,” Keena said. “Deadly gun violence has no place in our communities, neighborhoods or at our places of work.”

Hared received credit for 700 days already served and remains in custody while awaiting transfer to the Minnesota Department of Corrections.
