Nominating conventions are typically designed to give voters a glowing introduction to the party’s presidential and vice presidential nominees.
However, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), who was picked as former President Donald Trump’s running mate, does not seem to have won over voters.
On Tuesday night, CNN’s Harry Enten noted Vance’s disapproval rating is six points higher than his approval rating.
“I have gone all the way back since 1980, he is the first guy immediately following a convention — a VP pick — who actually had a net negative favorable rating, that is underwater,” Enten said. “The average since 2000 is plus 19 points. J.D. Vance is making history in the completely wrong way.”
He noted, “Usually [vice presidential picks] are popular. In this case, he’s dragging Trump down.”

When asked how Vance could help Trump, Enten dismissed that idea.
“Yeah, J.D. Vance won in 2022, but he only won by six points,” he explained. “That’s worse than Donald Trump did in 2020, it’s far worse than [Gov. Mike DeWine] did in 2022. He was the worst-performing Republican candidate in 2022 up and down the ballot in the state of Ohio.”
He also pointed out that Vance won white working-class voters, but his share of that demographic was smaller than that of Trump in 2020 or the state’s governor in 2022.
Finally, he said, “The J.D. Vance pick makes no sense from a statistical polling perspective.”
