Trump Slaps 25% Tariff on Countries Doing Business With Iran

President Donald Trump moved forcefully on trade policy, issuing what he called a sweeping and nonnegotiable order aimed at isolating Iran from the global economy.

According to Fox News, the announcement came via Truth Social, where Trump said the United States would immediately penalize any nation that continues commercial ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Under the directive, countries that do business with Iran would face a 25% tariff on all trade conducted with the United States.

Trump emphasized that the decision was not open to revision or delay.

“Effective immediately, any Country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a Tariff of 25% on any business being done with the United States of America. This Order is final and conclusive. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” the president wrote.

The post signaled a sharp escalation in economic pressure, framing the move as a decisive step rather than a negotiating tactic.

Should the U.S. impose a 25% tariff on countries trading with Iran?

Trump did not reference exemptions or timelines; instead, underscoring the immediacy of the order and its universal application to foreign partners engaged with Iran.

The announcement arrives as Iran faces mounting internal turmoil.

The country has entered its fourteenth straight day of widespread protests and unrest, with reports indicating that hundreds of people have been killed amid the escalating violence. The unrest has intensified international scrutiny of Tehran and added urgency to the Trump administration’s posture toward the regime.

While Trump did not directly cite the protests in his statement, the timing of the order placed the trade action squarely within a broader moment of heightened tension involving Iran.

The president’s message made clear that the United States intends to use its economic leverage to force a stark choice on the world stage: maintain access to U.S. markets or continue doing business with Tehran.
