Ah, another episode of “As the Political World Turns,” where the House Republicans pull the emergency brake on a Senate deal meant to fund the Department of Homeland Security. While travelers face endless TSA lines—seriously, over four-hour wait times?—Our lawmakers are deep in the trenches of a standoff, and you’ve got to wonder if anyone remembers that their job is serving the American public.

House Speaker Mike Johnson isn’t having any of it, declaring the Senate’s compromise as flimsy as a paper airplane caught in a windstorm. He’s calling for a short-term funding bill instead, and honestly, who could blame him? If the Democrats want to negotiate at three in the morning and then race home for the holidays, they can’t expect Republicans—or any rational human—to play along with their little game. It’s like being the last kid picked for dodgeball—the odds are never in your favor, especially when your counterparts are off celebrating while you’re left juggling critical immigration enforcement issues.

Should House Republicans support the Senate's funding deal for Homeland Security?

And let’s give a round of applause to some of our Republican rock stars like Chip Roy and Lauren Boebert, who are calling out the Senate for their hurried exit and lack of foresight. Who knew a trip to the airport could become a survival challenge? If TSA employees are selling blood just to make ends meet during the shutdown, perhaps we should all collectively wonder whether our government can actually manage airlines with such professionalism.

Meanwhile, Democrats are holding the line—or at least they say they are—yet the bargaining table is reminiscent of a game of chicken where no one wants to flinch. As airlines begin to crumble under the combined weight of dysfunction and delayed flights, one can only hope our leaders find some semblance of maturity and responsibility before the American people just give up and start traveling via carrier pigeons.
