A bizarre early morning scene in Brooklyn has left residents stunned after a video captured several people climbing out of a sewer hole before changing clothes on the sidewalk and driving away.
According to the New York Post, the strange encounter unfolded on Friday in the Gravesend neighborhood and quickly caught the attention of police after footage spread online.
Video obtained by The Flatbush Scoop appeared to show one individual lifting a manhole cover from McDonald Avenue and placing it near parked cars along the curb.
Moments later, a person carrying a flashlight emerged from the underground opening.
Then another person climbed out.
And another.
By the end of the clip, seven people could be seen gathering around the open sewer while standing in the middle of the street.
Several members of the group appeared to be wearing tall boots and waders typically associated with wet or hazardous conditions.
The footage then showed some of them removing what appeared to be dirty clothing directly on the sidewalk before tossing the gear into nearby vehicles waiting along the road.
Three cars were reportedly parked nearby as the group packed up and prepared to leave the area.
The unusual video immediately sparked confusion and speculation online, with viewers questioning why anyone would be traveling through New York City sewers in the middle of the night.
The NYPD confirmed it launched an investigation into the incident after the footage surfaced.
Additional video, later obtained by The Flatbush Scoop, showed officers returning to the scene to examine the sewer area more closely.
In the footage, officers appeared to pull a masked individual from the underground opening. The person was reportedly dressed in white coveralls stained brown and wearing a respirator mask while emerging from below street level.
Police have not publicly explained what investigators were searching for underground or whether the group had permission to access the sewer system.
Authorities also have not identified the individuals seen in the footage, and no arrests have been made in connection with the bizarre episode.
The strange scene quickly generated comparisons online to “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” with some social media users jokingly wondering whether Splinter had sent the group underground.
Others questioned whether the people involved were urban explorers, contractors, or trespassers.
Police have not released additional details as the investigation remains ongoing.
