A California family is searching for answers after a routine shift at McDonald’s ended with a young employee suffering severe burns in what authorities describe as a violent workplace attack.

According to the New York Post, Jacob Smith, 20, remains hospitalized more than a week after investigators say a coworker threw scalding hot oil on him at a McDonald’s restaurant in Yuba City on May 30.

The attack left Smith with second-degree burns across parts of his face, neck, arm, and back. He has been receiving treatment in the intensive care unit as doctors work to limit the damage and reduce the possibility that skin grafts will be needed.

According to Smith’s mother, Amber Smith, her son had been preparing to count money in an office area when the incident occurred.

“He was in the office getting ready to count the money when he saw out of the corner of his eye something, and he just turned, and the oil was just thrown on him,” she told KCRA.

Authorities have identified the suspect as 23-year-old coworker Jalani Bluett.

Police have not announced a motive, and Smith’s family says they are struggling to understand why the attack happened.

“What should have been a normal day at work turned into a nightmare,” Amber Smith wrote in an online fundraiser created to help cover medical and living expenses.

She said her son has repeatedly questioned why he was targeted.

“As his mother, it broke my heart when he looked at me and said, ‘Why would he do this to me?,’” she wrote.

Smith, who is engaged to be married, continues to recover while doctors manage what his mother described as intense pain.

Should there be stricter safety measures in fast-food restaurants to prevent workplace violence?

“The pain he’s experiencing is so excruciating that they can’t give him a level of pain medicine outside of the ICU,” she said.

Following the incident, Bluett allegedly fled the restaurant.

The Sutter County Sheriff’s Office initially listed him as a missing person, noting he was considered vulnerable because of a diagnosis and other concerns.

Authorities later located and arrested him.

Bluett now faces multiple felony charges, including battery causing serious bodily injury. He is being held in the Sutter County Jail without bail.

Investigators have not disclosed what led up to the confrontation and continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack.

For Smith’s family, the focus remains on his recovery and seeking accountability.

“I want justice to be served. I want him to serve the time he needs to serve for what he’s done to my son,” Amber Smith said.

“I mean, I don’t wish bad things towards him. I just want him to understand that what he did — really understand what he did — and the pain that he caused to my son is excruciating.”
