A quiet Sunday afternoon spiraled into chaos when a father was forced to make a split-second decision to protect his family after a violent encounter at a Texas shopping center.
According to the New York Post, authorities say the incident began when a driver caused a multi-vehicle crash along Highway 66, roughly 18 miles outside downtown Dallas, around 3:30 p.m.
The suspect then fled the wreckage and made his way to a nearby gas station, where police say he attempted to “take several vehicles by force.”
Moments later, the situation escalated dramatically.
Surveillance footage shows the suspect approaching a white Chevrolet Impala parked across the street. Inside the vehicle were a father, several children, and two adult women.
As the suspect reached the driver’s side door, the father quickly exited the car. Police say the man attempted to pull the father away from the vehicle, triggering a struggle.
During the confrontation, the children and the two women fled from the car.
Investigators say the father then “produced a firearm” and fired more than 10 rounds at the suspect.
The alleged carjacker was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Police have not yet released his identity, describing him only as a Hispanic male.
Miraculously, no one inside the family’s vehicle was hurt.
The father remained at the scene, fully cooperated with law enforcement, and handed over his weapon as part of the investigation.
Police indicated that charges are unlikely.
“That driver was defending himself and was fighting with that suspect. The car was occupied by several children as well as two other female adults,” Garland police Lt. Pedro Barineau said.
“We are looking at this as a self-defense case. We’re also looking into why this suspect did what he did.”
The incident has sparked strong reactions from the community, with many expressing support for the father’s actions.
“I have three kids. I’m gonna do whatever it takes to keep them safe. That kind of stuff is split-second,” resident Taylor Standfield said.
“It’s hard to imagine what it’s even like being in that situation with the adrenaline and knowing that you have kids in your vehicle.”
