A quiet school day in a small Texas community turned into a chaotic emergency Monday morning after gunfire erupted inside a high school classroom.

According to the New York Post, authorities say a 15-year-old student opened fire at Hill Country College Preparatory High School, located in the town of Bulverde near San Antonio.

The teenage suspect shot a female teacher before the situation came to a sudden and tragic end, according to the Comal County Sheriff’s Office.

The teacher was rushed to a hospital after being struck by gunfire, though officials did not release details about her condition.

Investigators also did not explain exactly how the confrontation unfolded, but confirmed that the student responsible for the shooting died at the scene.

Authorities did not provide further information about the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

In the immediate aftermath, school officials quickly evacuated the campus as law enforcement responded.

Officials said all other students and staff members were safe.

Should schools implement stricter safety measures after the Texas high school shooting?

Hill Country College Preparatory, which has fewer than 200 students, spent the day communicating with families through social media as the situation developed.

School administrators provided regular updates and instructions for parents and guardians as they worked to reunite families with their children.

Students were transported to a nearby middle school campus, where reunification procedures were put in place.

Parents and guardians were required to show valid photo identification before picking up students, according to the school’s posts.

The campus sits in a rural suburb with a population of roughly 6,000 residents, but the school attracts students from across Comal County.

Hill Country College Preparatory operates as a public school-of-choice and offers a specialized STEM-focused program.

Through that program, students have the opportunity to graduate not only with a high school diploma but also with an associate’s degree.

Monday’s shooting shattered the quiet routine of the small campus, leaving the community waiting for more answers about what led to the violence.
