Eric Dane has died at the age of 53, with his cause of death confirmed as respiratory failure, compounded by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

According to Fox News, Dane passed away on February 19 after a courageous battle with the debilitating condition.

His family released a statement saying, “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

The statement continued, “Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”

Dane’s wife later expressed her gratitude for the support they have received, writing on social media, “I am so blown away by the outpouring of love and support from our community. There aren’t words to express our gratitude. You are truly holding us up during this difficult time.”

Born and raised in San Francisco, Dane began his acting career in the early 1990s with guest roles on shows including “Saved By the Bell” and “The Wonder Years.” His breakthrough came in 2000 as Jason Dean on “Charmed.”

Dane later gained widespread fame as Dr. Mark Sloan, known as “McSteamy,” on “Grey’s Anatomy,” starting in 2006. He went on to star as Capt. Tom Chandler on TNT’s “The Last Ship” from 2014 to 2018 and appeared in series such as “Euphoria,” “Kabul,” “Countdown,” and “Brilliant Minds.”

He publicly revealed his ALS diagnosis in April 2025. During an interview later that year, Dane said he was willing to take extraordinary measures to fight the disease, showing the determination and resilience that marked both his career and personal life.

Before his passing, Dane left a heartfelt message to his daughters in a pre-taped interview for Netflix’s “Famous Last Words,” saying, “I tried. I stumbled sometimes, but I tried. Overall, we had a blast, didn’t we? I see you now playing in the ocean for hours, my water babies. Those days, pun intended, were heaven.”

He urged them, “I want to tell you four things I’ve learned from this disease, and I hope you don’t just listen to me. I hope you’ll hear me.”

The loss of Dane is being mourned by family, friends, and fans alike, who remember him not only for his acting but for his courage and advocacy in the face of ALS.
