Fetterman Backs GOP ‘Nuking’ Filibuster to Bring Shutdown to End

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) is ready for the federal government shutdown to be over — so much so he is ready support Republicans “nuking” the Senate filibuster to get the job done.

Fetterman spoke with reporters Tuesday — the 21st day of the shutdown — specifically about the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), per The Hill.

“There are no winners here. It’s not getting better every day here. People are going to start to get really hungry and I’ve been fully, fully committed to fund SNAP, open up the government,” he said of the program that is running out of funds. He added U.S. Capitol Police aren’t getting paid either.

“This is just bad political theater. Open it up,” he said.

Fetterman was then asked if he would back “Republicans ‘nuking’ the filibuster to let a House-passed funding measure pass the Senate with a simple-majority vote,” the outlet reported.

Should the Senate filibuster be removed to pass funding measures during a government shutdown?

“Carve it out for that, absolutely,” he said.

“We ran on that, we ran on killing the filibuster and now we love it. Carve it out so we can move on. I support it because it makes it more difficult to shut the government down in the future and that’s where it’s entirely appropriate,” he said. “I don’t want to hear any Democrat clutching their pearls about the filibuster. We all ran on it.”

The senator also likened the shutdown to the movie “Groundhog Day.”

“It’s ‘Groundhog Day’ and it’s not entertaining. That’s a great movie, but this is s*****. It’s embarrassing,” he said.
