The Republican National Committee (RNC) and the Republican Party of Arizona (AZGOP) announced Monday that they filed a joint lawsuit fighting an Arizona law allowing those who have never resided in the state to vote.

The suit, filed against Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, seeks to fight against a law allowing “any United States citizen who has never resided in the United States and whose parent is a United States citizen who is registered to vote” to vote in federal elections in Arizona using mail-in ballots.

“Arizona’s elections should be decided by Arizonans, not by individuals who have never lived a single day in this country,” RNC Chairman Michael Whatley said in a press release. “Democrats want to cheat in our elections by allowing votes from people who have never established legal residency. The RNC is defending the rights of Arizona voters to stop this unconstitutional law in its tracks.”

“Arizona’s elections must be decided but the people who call this state home, not non-residents,” AZGOP Chairwoman Gina Swoboda said in a press release. “This lawsuit defends the integrity of our elections and the constitutional rights of every lawful voter.”

Arizona’s largest county, Maricopa County, is notorious for taking days and sometimes weeks to count votes and call recent elections. Additionally, Governor and former Secretary of State Katie Hobbs vetoed a bill in February that would mimic Florida’s election and ballot counting procedures.

Recently, the Department of Justice (DOJ) sued Robert Page of Orange County, California, for not complying with requests to share documentation proving election officials were removing illegal voters from their lists. Last month, the DOJ filed a lawsuit against North Carolina for allegedly failing to comply with federal laws concerning a voter registration list.
