Report: Trump Wants Impeachments ‘Expunged’

WASHINGTON, DC - JANUARY 12: People gather at the base of the U.S. Capitol with large IMPEACH and REMOVE letters on January 12, 2021 in Washington, DC. The group is calling on Congress to impeach and remove President Donald Trump on the day that Democrats introduced articles of impeachment in response to Trump's incitement of a mob entering the U.S. Capitol Building on January 6. President Donald Trump wants his two impeachments from his first term in office to be erased from his record.

That is according to a report in The Wall Street Journal Thursday.

Congress would nullify those impeachments. But, constitutionally, that is not a thing. In essence, the moved would be symbolic.

In 2020, the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives impeached Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

This came after he made the distribution of aid to Ukraine contingent on the country opening an investigation into potential wrongdoing by former President Joe Biden and his family.

At the time, Biden was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. His son Hunter Biden served on the board of a Ukrainian energy company called Burisma.

Trump was again impeached in 2021 after he attempted to overturn the results of the 2020 election and inspired the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Should Trump's impeachments be expunged from his record?

In both impeachments, the Senate did not attain the two-thirds necessary to convict.

“President Trump and his allies have discussed pushing lawmakers to pass a resolution aimed at voiding his first-term impeachments, according to people familiar with the matter,” the WSJ reported. “It would have little legal significance, however, because the Constitution provides no procedure for undoing an impeachment, according to experts.”

Trump reiterated his stance on the topic in an interview with the WSJ this week.

“It should be done because I did nothing wrong,” Trump said of passing the resolution. “It was a rigged deal—it was a whole rigged situation.”

The outlet said the measure would not be attempted until after the midterm elections in November.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has said expunging Trump’s impeachments make “a lot of sense.”

“I think it makes a lot of sense the more the evidence comes out, the more we know they really were sham impeachments,” Johnson said. “We were saying it at the time, now we know. And they make a very compelling case that it should be expunged from the record, because it was a hyperpartisan attack job.”
