A man dressed as former President Donald Trump in an inflatable costume was tackled and kicked during a political protest in Swampscott, Massachusetts over the weekend, and now police say the man responsible is facing serious charges.

It happened during a “No Kings” rally at King’s Beach, just north of Boston, where protestors gathered to voice political frustrations. But what started as a peaceful event turned chaotic when 36-year-old Michael Curll allegedly attacked Trump supporter Jonathan Silveira, who was wearing the inflatable costume and waving an American flag.

The moment was captured on cellphone video by Silveira’s girlfriend, Angela Mazariegos. In the video, which has since been shared widely online, Curll can be seen sprinting toward Silveira from behind before allegedly kicking his legs and tackling him to the pavement.

Silveira didn’t see it coming.

“I was just there to show support for Donald Trump,” he told Boston 25 News. “I wasn’t trying to start anything. I love Donald Trump. Go Trump.”

Police say the attack was not just a push or shove. According to a report from the Swampscott Police Department, Curll allegedly “hooked Silveira’s legs” and then “wrapped his arms around his neck,” bringing him down hard on the pavement. Officers arrested Curll shortly after the incident.

On Monday, Curll appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. He was released on personal recognizance and is expected back in court for a pretrial hearing in December.

Sgt. Brendan Reen confirmed the details of the arrest to Fox News Digital and said the case remains open as officials continue reviewing evidence.

Meanwhile, Silveira shared the video of the incident on Facebook, writing, “My costume is ruined by a liberal lunatic.” The inflatable Trump suit, now torn and deflated, has become an unexpected symbol of the clash between political speech and public safety.

Silveira said the attack won’t stop him from showing up.

Should policing of political protests prioritize safety and respect for free speech?

“I’m going to keep supporting Trump unapologetically, even if others may not like it,” he said.

The incident quickly spread across social media and has sparked debate about political tolerance, free speech, and public safety. Supporters of Silveira praised his calm response, while others raised concerns about escalating tensions.

The town of Swampscott, like many areas near Boston, has a mix of political leanings. This isn’t the first time protests in the region have drawn strong reactions — but physical violence remains rare. Local leaders are calling for calm and respect as political events continue to draw larger and more divided crowds.

Officials have not said whether additional charges will be filed or if the case will rise to the level of a hate crime, but they are continuing to gather witness statements and review footage from the event.

For now, the court will handle the next steps, and both sides are preparing for what may be a closely watched legal case. The video, still circulating online, is a reminder of how quickly a peaceful protest can turn into something far more serious.
